Retired Law Enforcement

The Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office has updated our LEOSA qualification standards that will be effective January 1, 2026.  The new standard is to aid in the overall safety and security of our community members and to remain within LEOSA compliance and standards.  The LEOSA Application and Renewal process has not been affected by the qualification standards update.

The ACSO will have specific dates during the calendar year of 2026 for all Retired Law Enforcement Officers who fall under 18 U.S.C.A 926C(c)(2) to complete the standards for qualification in firearms training for active enforcement, 18U.S.C.A. 926C(c)(4).  You will be required to contact the ACSO LEOSA Program Supervisor to set your qualification date.

The ACSO Firearms qualification standard is a 25-round pistol course of fire.  The course incorporates one and two-handed shooting, failure to fire drill/phase one malfunction, tactical reload, double feed/phase two malfunction drill, and empty gun/combat reload.  This distance for the course of fire ranges from one yard to 25 yards.

The target used for the qualification is a TQ-19.  The scoring zone (5 points) is the gray (milk bottle share), and breaking the line counts as a hit.  Any hit outside the scoring zone, but still within the silhouette, is no points (0 points).  Any hit outside the silhouette is a disqualification/DQ.  Alibis should be provided for an unanticipated malfunction, and the shooter made an immediate reasonable effort to clear the malfunction.

The maximum score is 125 points.  The shooter will need to achieve a score of 100 (five rounds outside the scoring zone) or 80% to qualify.  Each shooter will be given two attempts to qualify during a single range day.  A third attempt to qualify will be offered during another scheduled range day.

Each shooter will be responsible for their own ammunition, duty belt or equivalent (holster and magazine case), eye protection, ear protection, and a hat is recommended.  The ACSO will provide the instructor(s) and the targets.  Please remember this is not a Concealed Carry qualification, so no firearm will be removed from a pocket and fired during qualification.

The following dates are scheduled for LEOSA Qualification at Keyah Grande Guest House, located at 13211 W Hwy 160, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147.   You must contact the ACSO LEOSA Program Supervisor to reserve your qualification date.
